There are hundreds of types of grasses and ground covers. Not all types are available in New Orleans however because of climate, as well as soil type and rainfall.
The most popular warm-season grasses are: Zoysia, Bermuda, St. Augustine, and
Centipede. The Garden Gates uses Zoysia and St. Augustine almost exclusively. These two types of grasses have proven time and time again to tolerate our harsh summers and rainy cold winters.
Ground covers that are recommended by The Garden Gates Landscape Company are asian jasmine, liriope, aztec, mondo tall and dwarf, as well as ajuga in some spots. Ground covers are great for heavily shaded areas where warm season grasses will not grow as well. If you do want grass in those shaded areas, you may only be able to put down perennial rye in the cooler months. There has not been a proven shade tolerant grass in New Orleans yet. Another option would be synthetic turf.
